Amethyst is the purple variety of quartz. Steeped in history and mythology, it was said to be the favoured stone of Saint Valentine who wore an amethyst ring engraved with a cupid, this popularising this gemstone for lovers. The word amethyst is derived from the Greek “amethos” which means “not drunken” and, in ancient Greece, the stone was believed to cure drunkenness. Amethyst is also the birthstone for February.
